CHATEAU GRIEF PATREON (free tutorials this week as usual)
This is Burney Falls, the crown jewel of McArthur Burney State Park, located just north of Redding, California. It’s 129 feet high, and was named for the Samuel Burney who settled the area, recognized the significance of this magnificent waterfall and presented the land to the state in 1926.
There’s camping and hiking and plenty of fishing in the area, you can rent a paddle boat to go out on the lake, and it sounds absolutely wonderful.
On the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend, the park hosts a Heritage day that shows what life was like for the California Pioneers. There are blacksmithing demonstrations, quill calligraphy, rope making. You can make candles and watch two men operating a hand cross-cut saw. There’s spinning and weaving and bead making, along with practical stuff like how to start a fire with flint and steel (perfect time to hype the video I made of Joe making strikers )
There’s a fiddle band, and bakers, and you can eat barbecue and drink fresh apple hard cider. Everyone’s dressed up in mountain man hats and having a grand old time. They say there’s even a ‘hands-on’ branding booth, though I don’t think that’s the sort of thing you can just encourage non-cowboys to do on a whim. The whole event sounds like a wonderful time. This year it’s October 8, so take a visit!
Xander banishes all holidays so he won’t be there, but still.
This is so marvellous!
