San Luis Reservoir

Did you know that each full moon of the year has a special name?  Last week I looked up in the sky and went “Oh boy we’re in for it now”  and was about to do my Rorschach ‘the end of the world is nigh’ act when someone said, “oh yeah the moon is supposed to be bright pink tonight.”  It was Bright. Pink.    

Here’s a link to a page that has a bunch of the different moon names for each month of the year: celticmythmoon.com/moon.html.  Fascinating bit of history, how in more agrarian times things were named with this poetic utilitarianism.  The Foxfire books (link if you’ve never heard of them- www.foxfire.org/shop/the-foxfi…) have a whole section on ‘Planting by the Signs’ and which moons to perform which chores by (cutting timber, hatching eggs, killing weeds).  It’s an interesting peek into the unique culture and history of Appalachia and the European traditions that flourished there under this almost mystical observation of the earth and heavens.  

The painting is of San Luis Reservoir.  It’s the largest water-storage tank in California (I think the biggest in the US too).  It doesn’t get any rain or runoff like most proper reservoirs do, it’s just a holding tank for Los Angeles’s drinking water.  The rainwater will flow down from the Sierras into the California Aqueduct, and from there it gets pumped into San Luis as a holding tank.  There’s great bass fishing at the base of the dam in O’Neill Forebay, and it’s certainly a lovely misty oasis type area in the middle of the standard California desert.  Very green and cool.  

And if you’re wondering why there’s all those green outgassing from the lake and toxic glowing junk…well, have you seen the stuff that comes out of those Los Angeles faucets?
