The Battle of Fremont Peak by chateaugrief The Battle of Fremont Peak by chateaugrief
This is the path up to Fremont Peak, CA.  Back in the wild wild west, when John Fremont was running around doing his derring do, he nearly fought a battle here, against the governor of Alta California Jose Castro.  Notice that it's not today named 'Castro Peak', although Castro spent time apparently camped out on the property, trying to...something.  A couple of wars later, Castro apparently gave his house to the Breen family of Donner Party fame in a humanitarian gesture to help them get started in California.  You can visit the house in San Juan Bautista, where they give expensive tours.  Anyway, Castro is camped out on the mountain peak, with some of his army, and Fremont is wandering around trying to stir everyone up with tales of how great it would be if California joined the United States.  Castro issues Fremont an ultimatum to leave and never come back.  Fremont retreats to Gavilan peak across the valley (which I've painted before) and builds himself a fort and flies an enormous American flag from the top of the tallest flagpole he could make.  Castro figures that this is basically an act of war, and starts mustering an army in the valley below.  Fremont makes like he's going to remember the Alamo in a very personal way, but then his flagpole falls over, and he considers it a bad omen.  So he sneaks away and heads to San Francisco, where presumably, he had a couple drinks and decided to come back with more men.

Like I said, today it's named 'Fremont Peak'.

Inexplicably, there are no landmarks in in the area named after Xander.  We've got to fix this.

Love the colour contrast! I'm especially a fan of the detailed rock texture and how you played with the camera focus??

Thank you!  I'm always nervous about using the focus stuff...glad it worked.  It can look so good when it's done well, but if not...well it's an easy way get something done on a deadline! :)

you're right, it's a good time-saving cheat...

A stunningly beautiful piece--colors, lighting, texture, and all. Being a Bay Area resident myself, what I really like about your art is how familiar it feels. I've never encountered another artist who paints the same locations you do, and seeing your work holds a special significance for me.

Glad you like it!  I try and pick spots that maybe aren't as well known internationally, but they're in every bay area resident's list of 'school field trips' probably.  That's my favorite part of research, going out to these places to take reference pics!

You have an amazing gift for landscapes in digital! What a wonderful capture of light, nature, structure and dimension! The way you fade out the furthest point, the way the light glows like a real sun shining right through onto my eyes! THe way the rocks glisten and hold solid form, the grass strands that pop out and show fullness in the shrubbery... beautiful.. extravagant! :D <3

Thank you!  I'm glad you like it!  I keep working on those fade gradients that help the sunlight look real! There's always so much to learn.   Each painting is like relearning everything each time.
