Description
This is Alcatraz Island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. It was a very famous prison until 1963, but it’s closed now and the buildings are all in ruins. Now it’s a very lucrative tourist destination for the National Park Service. Wikipedia claims that no one ever escaped from Alcatraz, but that’s not what I remember the docents saying way back in the 90’s when I was there. Here’s the list of all the escapes www.alcatrazhistory.com/escape… when someone did get out, they listed them as ‘missing presumed drowned’, which is kind of convenient. However, the ocean around the bay is very treacherous, and the water is very cold, and full of great white sharks and it’s unlikely that anyone could swim through it to shore. The most famous of these was dramatized as a 1979 movie starring Clint Eastwood… and here’s where things get surreal.
Clint Eastwood actually did the ‘escape from Alcatraz’.
In 1951, he was riding in a plane that crashed outside San Francisco Bay outside of Point Reyes which is a couple miles from Alcatraz, only not sheltered in the bay like Alcatraz is. It was October. He swam 2 or 3 miles to shore against the current. www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity… while dragging the injured pilot along and saving his life. At night. He says he didn’t know about the sharks, but if you were a shark, would you tangle with this guy? I mean, would you? Do ya feel lucky?
Someone feels lucky, but he doesn’t count.
